PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Located in the heart of New York, NY, the American Museum of Natural History’s historic re-roofing project highlights the trusted performance of SlopeShield Plus Self-Adhered in protecting one of the world’s most valuable collections of artifacts, specimens, and exhibits. Tasked with reroofing the 100+ year-old natural slate roof, the project team needed a solution that would provide immediate and lasting protection against moisture intrusion while ensuring the priceless artifacts inside remained safeguarded throughout construction. With its proven durability and ability to withstand harsh jobsite conditions, SlopeShield Plus SA was the clear choice.
To complete this intricate restoration, the team first removed everything down to the existing concrete plank deck, then installed new plywood sheathing, followed by SlopeShield Plus SA, and finished with new slate tiles fastened with copper nails. Keeping the museum "in the dry" was a top priority, and SlopeShield Plus SA provided immediate protection from the elements, allowing work to continue without risking water infiltration. Its six-month UV stability ensured reliable performance throughout the project's phased timeline, even in winter conditions and high winds. Additionally, the membrane’s robust composition allowed it to endure foot traffic and heavy equipment without compromising performance.
By providing continuous protection throughout construction, SlopeShield Plus SA enabled the museum to remain fully operational, ensuring visitors could continue experiencing its world-renowned exhibits without disruption. As a trusted solution for historic preservation projects, SlopeShield Plus SA delivered the durability, adhesion, and weather resistance necessary to protect both the building and its invaluable contents. Working alongside Thomas A. Fenniman Architects, general contractor Nicholson & Galloway, Inc., and VaproShield representatives from Empire Sales Group, the project team successfully executed a roofing solution that will safeguard this iconic institution for generations to come.
