PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Washington Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth (CDHY), located in Vancouver, WA, is an innovative construction project showcasing the integration of advanced building materials for optimal performance. This remarkable facility is built on a mass timber substrate, a sustainable choice for construction. To ensure long-term durability and moisture management of the mass timber structure, WrapShield SA Self-Adhered, WallShield IT Integrated Tape, and SlopeShield Plus Self-Adhered were meticulously installed.
More than 31,000 sq. ft. of WrapShield SA, a self-adhered water resistive air barrier, was installed on the walls providing a secondary defense (after the wall cladding) against moisture and air penetration. Convenient pre-cut rolls of WrapFlashing SA coupled with VaproLiquiFlash were used to seal rough openings, enhancing protection against moisture and air intrusion. Additionally, VaproShim SA, was utilized to establish a rain screen drainage plane behind the Z-girts, boosting the building envelope's ability to dry out by facilitating airflow. VaproShield’s SlopeShield Plus SA airtight vapor permeable roofing underlayment was the perfect choice to protect the CLT roof from moisture damage during and after construction. SlopeShield Plus SA offers a high drying capacity helping to prohibit the formation of mold and mildew which can cause rot, corrosion and eventually lead to structural damage. During construction, WallShield IT (green) was temporarily installed on the CLT beams and columns, offering best-in-class moisture protection and is easily removed during the next phase of the construction.
